There is an acute need for water management at various level- national level, state level, district level and village level. While there are many initiatives being taken by government on management of water at macro level, we need to continuously deliberate on what else and what more can be done; so that we can provide positive and constructive suggestions to central and state government.

Million Smiles is not about group of people coming together to suggest what to do!

Rather, we intend to bring out-of-box ideas from the larger section of society, ideas which holds potential to be game changer in water resource management for Northern part of India and later across the country and beyond.

To begin with we would like to join hands for revival of Yamuna river, for the larger objective of water management in northern part of India. Some of the suggestions on what could done for river Yamuna revival, received or emerged through initial discussions is compiled below-

  1. Create timescale map from satellite imageries and Survey of India maps for identification of river flood plain
  2. Community programme to sensitise and engage in protection of river flood plain
  3. Prepare paleochannel map of river Yamuna from Vyasi/Lakhwar to Okhla barrage and than upto Prayag
  4. Explore through deliberation the relevance of de-silting vis-a-vis having flood plain as water reservoir
  5. Appropriate plantations in the river flood plain as suggested by domain experts
  6. Participatory / community based de-silting
  7. Explore mineral weathering for Yamuna flood plain

Your inputs and suggestions are welcome.
